We all know the myriad benefits of the garden, they promote health and tranquility, and they provide an area to enjoy the sun or a gentle spring rain. A garden can make or break a home, but it can also be the most difficult area to design. Maybe it feels like there's simply too much upkeep, too many hours on your knees in the dirt, or maybe you just don't feel confident knowing what to plant and when. But don't put your garden in the too hard basket just yet, with a little know-how there's all kinds of small things that will make a big difference to your outdoor area.

Whether you've got a full backyard, a balcony, or even just a small porch, we think you deserve a beautiful garden, and we're here to help you get one! Whether it's adding furniture, function, or a few clever design flairs, today we're going to look at some little things that will help you to make the most of your garden.

1. Add some furniture

Furniture is a great way to ensure that you actually spend some deserved time in your garden. Usually we think of a classic picnic table, patio furniture, and wicker, but here at homify we recommend you go for full luxury. These days there are some great options for outdoor furniture made from materials that are both weather resistant and eminently comfortable. A couch like this one will see you spending the summer hours enjoying your garden like you should with a good book and a sneaky cocktail or two.

2. Include a barbecue

The garden is a great place to entertain guests, and if you ask us, all the best party food comes off a barbecue grill. You can decide just how serious you want to go depending on how much space you have available; go all out with a custom built outdoor kitchen, or keep it simple with a small charcoal grill. The best part is that you can take vegetables right out of your own garden and throw them straight on to the grill for the freshest meal you'll ever eat, and your guests will be thrilled!

3. Hanging pots

If you really don't have the space for a garden, an all too common problem in these days of apartment living, you can still get all the benefits with whatever outdoor space you have. Hanging pots can be suspended from a balcony, and when you step inside you'll feel like your lost in your very own secret garden. In fact potted plants in general are a great way to freshen up any outdoor area, and all you need is a little surface space. Try planting fresh herbs for the kitchen, or some scented flowers to add a little romance!

4. Succulents and cacti

Between work, kids, and a busy social life, some of us just don't have time for a garden, we totally understand, and we have a solution. Succulents and cacti are a super low maintenance option to add some green to your home. Adapted to life in the more desolate regions of the planet these plants will mostly survive on air moisture alone, meaning you can put it in the ground and forget about it. Not to mention they look great, with surreal shapes straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. Just be careful when you're planting them!

5. Build a tiny garden

If you want the appearance of a full garden, but only have a tiny space, then build your own! Using natural materials is a great way to unify the aesthetic, and this bamboo construction looks fabulous. The benefit of this is that you can shape it to whatever space you have available, even a tiny corner like we see here. Build multiple levels to fit more in, and talk to a gardener to help you choose a colour scheme, we simply love the red on green here. At a stretch you could even put this indoors, though you may need to vacuum every now and then.

6. Stepping stones

The benefit of stepping stones is that like all great design features they have a functional purpose as well. While they look great, they also allow you to get right into your garden so that you can tend to the plants without getting too messy. Using large flat stones is a classic favourite, and we think they look great, but you can also substitute a hard weather resistant wood. We've included a tiny example here, because as we've talked about most of us don't have the space for a huge garden, but if you're lucky enough to have a full backyard then take yourself on a journey with a winding path!

Here at homify we're all about making the most of what you have, and we hope these garden tips will make a huge difference in your home. If you don't have an outdoor area, but still want some flowers in your life, try out these great indoor plant ideas!
