Welcoming a new arrival to the family is an exciting and joyful time, but it's not without its challenges, especially when it comes to preparing your home. The property market has seen houses steadily shrink in size, and while modern apartments may have plenty of space for a busy young couple, finding room for a new family member can be a big ask. On top of that, it's important that your child's room is an inspiring and creative place that will stimulate their imaginations, and provide them a safe and comfortable space to play, especially when you want to get them out of your hair!

That's why today we're looking at some fantastic ideas for children's bedrooms that will work in even the smallest of apartments. No matter how much space you have available, there's still plenty of ways to provide your child with everything they need, and in the process beautify your home. So let's take a look at the innovative work of the professionals here at homify and get inspired!

1. Start simple

There's no more dedicated interior decorators than children. Over the course of their life they will plaster the walls with posters, stickers, and even scribbles, and so there's no need to design a complete room right at the start. Instead you can leave things relatively sparse and simple, and allow them the freedom to put their own personal stamp on the room.

2. Multifunctional furniture

The main challenge with turning a small room into a child's bedroom is how to fit in all the furniture they need. The best way to address this is with multi-functional furniture, which combines several pieces into one and saves you a huge amount of space. This wonderful bunk bed features storage drawers down below, while the end has been turned into a series of shelves with a foldout desk for the kids to do their homework.

2. Use vibrant colours

A clever trick interior decorators often use to distract from the size of a room is to employ bright colours and patterns in the decor. This way our focus is drawn to the aesthetic qualities of the room rather than the size. A design like this, with a three dimensional geometric pattern featuring a vivid pink that is also expressed in the cushions on the bed, will inspire your children, and lift their spirits.

3. Fun beds

One of the hardest parts of growing up is knowing that you'll never get to sleep in a race car bed again, but one of the best parts about having kids is you get to live vicariously through them! Novelty beds are a lot of fun, and by creating a cosy cubby-hole the size of the rest of room becomes less important. We love how they've turned this bed into a little garden shed, complete with folding doors for ultimate privacy. It looks amazing, and it doesn't take up any more space than a regular bed, and the drawer underneath makes it even more economical.

4. Blend aesthetics and function

When we say practical, we don't mean boring! If you only seek to meet the functional needs of the bedroom, you'll end up with a bland space that may not be so easy to decorate. Instead try using functional pieces that also contribute to the decor, like this fabulous tree shaped book case!

6. Think about storage from the start

Kids absolutely churn through clothes, growing out of outfits every six months, so believe us when we say you'll need as much storage as possible. A bed like this is not only fun for the kids, it's also a full set of drawers, providing plenty of storage without taking up extra floor space. Oh, and it's also adorable!

7. Wall mounted cabinets

Another great way to fit in more storage is to mount cabinets on the wall so that you can use the space beneath. This whole workspace has been custom built for the room, with a floating desk, and recessed lighting underneath the cabinets to illuminate it.

8. Recesses and nooks

Kids are suckers for collectibles and ornaments, and they'll need plenty of shelf space to display them. Because these shelves are generally low enough for a child to reach you often can't use the space underneath, so to counter this try using recessed shelves that are built into the wall. As you can see here the recessed shelf runs above the twin beds, freeing up the space below without the threat of falling objects, plus with that LED lighting it looks amazing!

9. Have fun!

The main thing to remember when designing a kid's room is just to have fun! It's the one room in the house where you can leave taste and trends behind and just follow your inner child, or if they're old enough to get involved, your actual child!

And now you've got a few practical tips you can focus on giving your child the beautiful room they deserve. For more tips for small homes, check out this article on things every small bathroom needs!
