Although the word ‘cosy’ has a simple definition – giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation – what it is exactly that creates this feeling is harder to pin down.  Cosiness plays a large part in that intangible process of turning a residence into a cherished home, so for the most part we all strive to add some cosy touches to our abodes, but how exactly do we achieve do this?

What makes a space feel cosy will, to some extent, mean different things to different people, after all, feelings are internal and inherently subjective. However, there are a few general guidelines to creating cosier spaces in your home, and to help you in this endeavour today’s article takes a look at these general rules. Let’s get started…

1. Let’s start with lighting

How a room is lit drastically affects the ambiance of the space; emphasising different areas of the room and altering the mood. For a cosier feeling, opt for mood lighting, smaller lamps and candles. A fire place is instant way to increase the feeling of cosiness, but it's obviously only practical in colder climes.

2. Customised is cosier

Personal touches go a long way toward making the space feel cosy. You want to room to feel as though it’s been lovingly shaped by the occupant, so fill it with photos and personalised accents. In relation to this point it’s also better to opt for a more lived in look by including some older furniture pieces, and avoiding minimalist or industrial décor.

3. It makes scents

When we talk about creating cosy spaces we tend to think about what we can see and touch, but all of our senses play a part in forming this feeling, so that includes our sense of smell. Pleasant aromas can help a room to feel cosier, whether it’s the smell of cooking, or a simple scented candle.

4. Comfy seating is the crux of the matter

This is perhaps the most obvious point on our list, but it may also be the most important: comfy seating is essential! You can’t have a cosy space without somewhere comfortable to sit.

5. Secret, secluded spaces

Nothing says cosy like a secret, secluded space where we can hide away from the world. The ingenious bedroom nook above by IR Architecture obviously won’t work for everyone, but you could construct a canopy bed, or enclose a comfortable seating area with shelving.

6. Organic materials are naturally cosy

An abundance of organic materials help to create a cosier atmosphere  by bringing a natural feeling to the room, so opt for a lot of wood, and place a few plants and fresh flowers around the place to add a sense of life and vibrancy.

7. Tactile textures

Curtains, pillows and soft accents go a long way toward creating a cosier atmosphere, so go for long, flowing drapes, soft rugs and throw pillows.

We hope this has helped you to make your home as cosy as it can be! If you're in need of more advice take a look at how to make your house more of a home.
