The summers in India are hot, humid and long. It’s a season when due to heat we really don’t feel like eating. But we can’t stop cooking. Food has to be prepared and food waste of vegetable and fruits peels and seeds will be there. Food waste when exposed to hot and humid weather, decomposes fast and become a playground for germs. Summer is the perfect time for germs and bacteria to grow and spread diseases. Decomposed food waste also causes bad odour which spreads fast in the room causing a stinking smell which if not checked promptly becomes unbearable.

1. Zip up the odour

Zipper bag is very effective in preventing food odour in the kitchen. Put the food waste in it a zip it tight. Zipper bags can be recycled or washed and used again and again, so it doesn’t harm the environment.

Baking soda which is easily available in every home is very useful in treating food waste. Sprinkle some baking soda on newspaper or plastic bag and keep it at the bottom of the dustbin before throwing the garbage in it. The acidic property of food waste is neutralized by the alkaline nature of soda thus preventing decomposition and stench. After throwing the garbage, cleaning of the dustbin becomes easy with soda sprinkled in it.

Tannin and chlorophyll of green tea has deodorizing power and can absorb bad odour from its surrounding. Sprinkle tea leaves, tea bags or even powered tea leaves in the dustbin or garbage bag with food waste and in fact you can smell the difference or odour disappearing.  Newspaper can absorb moistures, the main reason why the germs germinate on the waste products or smells. Wrap the fruit or vegetable peels or any waste foods in newspaper before throwing in the bin.
