Bedroom design is just as important as any other room in your home except for one thing: it needs to promote healthy relaxation and sleep patterns. The importance of healthy, long sleep is a totally underestimated concept to most people. The rush of the day, the endless emails, phone calls and messages, or taking care of a family can wreak havoc on proper sleep patterns.

If you're working on getting more sleep or changing your sleeping patterns, you should start first with the design of your bedroom. This should include everything from setting the right mood with lighting and the right paint colours to burning scents that will send your body into relaxation and meditation mode. Below we have some great tips and tricks of things you can do to get a better nights' sleep – today!

Use indirect lighting to create a relaxed atmosphere

First, it's best to make sure that your bed is situated to avoid direct light from windows and even any artificial light sources. Even in the darkest hours of the night, the light outside from the moon will be much brighter than the lack of light within our bedrooms. If this is impossible for you, then the next suggestion is your best option!

Take a look at this example and see how the area of the bed where the homeowners would lay their heads is farthest from the direct light of the large, bay window.  There are plenty of design options open to you in this case, just keep the headboard against the wall and choose the wall furthest from the window – again, you can add a canopy or overhead fabric to block out even more light.

Hang dark curtains & blinds to completely shut out light

If you don't have the space or the availability to avoid the natural light, that's okay – there are plenty more options! Dark curtains and blinds are another option to completely block out natural light and with built-in blinds and the right design tricks, dark curtains or blinds don't have to become a permanent design feature of your bedroom.

If you opt for built-in dark blinds, then during the day they can easily disappear to let full light in. If you choose darker curtains, simply tie them back or mix them with lighter shades of curtains for a dramatic and full look.

Another trick is to try what this designer did and not only add a blocking feature to the window to shade the bed, but also add wall to wall curtains that can be pulled together when you're ready to sleep for full privacy. Consider a canopy-style bed if privacy and lack of light is what you're after!

Install a ceiling fan to keep the temperature cool, but not cold

A lot of people prefer sleeping in a colder environment, rather than a warm one. However, there are limits to how cold you should allow your bedroom to be.  If your bedroom is too cold and then you're waking up too hot or sweating, these drastic adjustments in body temperature can be unhealthy.

To solve this problem, it is best to keep things neutral and cool, rather than cold. How do you do this? A proper ceiling fan! A ceiling fan will not only keep your bedroom air fresh, but it will also keep your room at a consistently cool climate year-round. Chilly air conditioning is harder on our bodies than one might think and even in the hottest conditions, the body takes about seven days to adjust with an item as simple as a ceiling fan.

Keep oil burners, incense, and scented candles as decoration and to fill the room with soothing scents

We suggest you be careful with an environment that has too many scents going on – this can be disrupting to your senses and sleep patterns. Yet finding the perfect scent and in the right amounts can be incredibly beneficial to relaxing your brain activity before bedtime!

Strong plants and herbs, as well as electricity-driven scent machines and gadgets, can put too much scent in one area, giving you headaches. Instead, opt for oil burners, incense and scented candles to create an environment that has a subtle and consistent smell every night. Oil burners, incense and candles come in a variety of scents, making choosing the right one for you easy and fun.  This is also a cost-effective option as these three items can last months when used intermittently.

Don't bring a TV or laptop into the room – make it a tech-free zone

We know it's hard in today's world – but leave TVs, laptops and tablets out of the bedroom.  If you use one for your alarm clock, this is okay, but be disciplined enough to turn your devices to do not disturb mode or airplane mode. If you can't do this, or feel to tempted to browse through Instagram or Facebook – then charge all devices outside of your bedroom and purchase a good, ole' fashioned alarm clock.

It will be hard to get used to at first but after a few weeks you will notice your sleep patterns becoming more consistent and perhaps even more importantly, you will realize that there is more to life than social media updates and cute pictures.

Fill the room with plush rugs and textiles to make it cosy

One of the best parts about designing and decorating a bedroom is that you can finally add all those great, super-cosy items you wish you could put everywhere for one giant, plush home. Some worry that if their bedroom is too cosy then it cannot become a place of work, whether that be writing, blogging or vlogging – well, if that's the case, then good. Your bedroom shouldn't be a place you associate with working and stress!

Grab large pillows, blankets and throws and pile them on top of your bed – also, think about high-pile rugs that are soft to the touch, yet easier to clean. The bedroom pictured here has done exactly that – the bedding, pillows, lighting and high-pile, plush rug make it welcoming and inviting for sleep and relaxation, yet not so much that you never want to leave!

Get a big comfortable bed, and don't store things underneath

Finally we talk about the most important aspect of any bedroom – the bed!  The bed should by far be the biggest investment piece in your bedroom, if not your entire home.  A great bed can last you a lifetime, similar to a great sofa, bike or car.

If you live with a partner, think about investing in a bed that offers two separate sides of comfort that can be adjusted depending on your preferences. If you're living alone, go to your local bed or mattress shop and talk to a specialist about your body and its needs.  If you tend to have back pain, think about a harder bed and vice versa!  Educating yourself on the right kind of bed and/or mattress can be daunting but you will feel way more informed afterwards!

Try to make the room symmetrical

If you ask most people, having a symmetrical space is preferred over one that isn't.  In a bedroom, where most items tend to be doubled-up due to a partner or family circumstances, try to keep things as symmetrical as possible.

When purchasing a big, comfortable double-bed, place it accordingly and add night stands on either side as well as matching table-top lamps. You should even keep things symmetrical in the details – add the same amount of pillows to both sides, and make sure they are similar shapes and sizes.

Trust us, the visual and psychological effects of symmetry are incredibly soothing, and if you simply try them in your bedroom, you'll wake up feeling more energized, organized and receptive to the world around you!
