This incredible 30 square metre apartment – yes, you heard that right! 30 square metres! – designed by Milanese architect Cristina Meschi, received widespread acclaim, gracing the glossy pages of many design and architecture magazines. And, rightfully so! It is truly incredible what she has done with such a small space.

It's no boring, undifferentiated space optimisation: it's beautiful and functional. So beautiful, it would make anyone want to ditch their excessively large homes and opt for the ingenious spatial combinations and solutions demonstrated here. Now let's step inside and bask in the delight of this tiny little abode!

Materials, materials, materials

The beautiful red bricks, with cement mortar, have been exposed throughout the design.

Accompanied by smooth, sleek white surfaces; the contrast between the asperity of the aged brick and the refined, brand-new white walls is striking. It creates a wonderful balance in the space.

What is it?

You may have caught a glimpse of it in the last shot, but if you weren't entirely sure what it was – you are now!

That's right – it's a mezzanine bed! Rather that taking up scarce and valuable floor space on the ground level, it wedges itself up above, almost out of sight.

Bed mezzanine

The bed mezzanine is constructed from chip-board, and left unfinished, exposing the raw and textured surface. The bed is accessed by a simple steel ladder that rests against the grey, concrete-look wall.

The furniture in the living space, below, is simple and elegant. It has an unmistakable Scandinavian charm and craftsmanship that is second to none.

The living space

A look back towards the brick wall offers a striking image! The crisp white couch sitting at its base contrasts it beautifully. A designer table, finished in red, adds a wonderful accent; while the artwork is thoughtful and considered.

Peering out from behind the brick wall, we see a slither of the kitchen. Perfectly connected to the rest of the space, it is also distinct and delimited. Now, let's take a closer look…

The kitchen

The kitchen is oh-so minimal, oh-so-cool. White handleless cabinetry is met with stainless steel to add an industrial edge. The cupboards wrap around the back walls, leaving space for the dining table in the centre. The kitchen becomes a social hub in the small apartment.

The bathroom

Our final port of call today is the bathroom – and it's no mere afterthought! Decked out in floor to ceiling mosaic tiles, it's quite the treat! The tiles opt for a monochromatic colour palette, allowing the patterning to steal the show. If you're still after more bathroom inspiration, you're sure to find a myriad of wonderful ideas here!
